Introduction

Welcome to the North Dakota Baby Safe Haven Law training course. We will cover the history of Baby Safe Haven Law and North Dakota’s implementation protocols.

First, let’s establish what a Baby Safe Haven Law is: The North Dakota Baby Safe Haven Law allows a parent (or an agent of the parent with the parent’s consent), who feels they are unable to take care of their infant, to surrender the infant without facing prosecution for abandonment.

Texas was the first state to pass a Baby Safe Haven Law in 1999. It only took nine years after that for every other state to pass their version of a Baby Safe Haven Law. Having these laws in place help avert desperate parents from leaving an infant in dangerous conditions.
